The Eternals weaved their way into human mythology across several cultures, with each member of the ensemble cast correlating to an existing god or mythological character. It’s a sweet, gentle moment that understands the need to be quiet and contemplative, establishing the love these two characters share in such a special way. After a streak of consistently popular films, “Eternals” is one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most controversial installments, with mixed reception reflected by the MCU’s lowest Rotten Tomatoes critic score, currently sitting at 47%.ĭirected by Chloe Zhao, “Eternals” centers around a group of godlike beings who protected the development of intelligent life for millennia, but chose not to intervene in major human conflict. As she’s on the verge of tears, Caitlyn reaches out, running a delicate finger across Vi’s cheek before she takes her hand and they embrace.

Caitlyn joins Vi on the bed as she pours her heart out, lamenting on her failure to rescue Jinx and how their traumatic childhood led to a future that now seems impossible to salvage. Before confronting the council the duo return to Caitlyn’s home, taking shelter in her bedroom for a brief moment of respite. The final act does a wonderful job of developing their romantic bond, even if at times it can seem rushed. As a hostage the enforcer offers her own life to save Vi, even if the two are never in any danger to begin with. Vi is brutally injured and Caitlyn does everything she can to save her, all before the duo are kidnapped and taken in by a group of rebels. We love to see it, and this development grows throughout the episode as the two exchange loving glances and care for one another as their situation grows more dire. I wrote about their first super duper gay interaction last week, where Vi christens Caitlyn with the nickname ‘Cupcake’ before calling her hot and highlighting the benefits of her sex appeal.Īfter this she immediately descends into one of the club’s chambers with another woman, confirming to us that she is a real tutti frutti. I admire this approach, yet it also means the two women sometimes lack the development to help the show’s more tender moments land. Perhaps they knew a same-sex relationship needed to be tackled with increased delicacy, understanding it was the first time League of Legends was broaching upon such a thing outside of supplemental comics. They’re both smoking hot, but the way Arcane develops their romance and that of Vi and Caitlyn is strikingly different, and deliberately so. Jayce and Mel are great characters, but their fling isn’t particularly well developed and the way in which they bump uglies is framed in such a straight, leering way. This is the same show that features a heteronomative sex scene between two characters that feels woefully out of place, especially when said characters have a far smaller impact on the overall narrative. Yet part of me feels like the best is yet to come, or a more intimate rendition was being held back until the second season rolls around. Related: Molly Ostertag On The Owl House, Darkest Night And Mainstream RepresentationĪs I sat down to watch the final act I feared these feelings would be thrown aside as playful queerbaiting, but instead I was met with a serious queer relationship that blossomed into something meaningful and unexpected, with Vi and Caitlyn confiding in one another despite the differences that define them. Given Riot Games’ history I expected them to remain gals being pals, even after the second act saw them flirt and bicker in a way that eventually leads to romance.

Their distrust evolves into intimacy, both of them chained together towards a destiny they’re unable to avoid as they seek to find Jinx and uncover the truth behind Silco’s twisted criminal empire. They begin as rivals - two women hailing from polar opposite backgrounds, their views on society as a whole juxtaposed in a way that makes their evident chemistry so satisfying to witness. Vi and Caitlyn sit at the centre of Arcane, their relationship helping give the world of Runeterra a level of humanity that few others in the show have managed.
